Boris Onischenko

In 1976, at the Montreal Olympics, Boris Onischenko was caught cheating in fencing. Boris was an affiliate of the Soviet team, who were contending in the pentathlon. He was also a member of the infamous KGB. At some stage in the event, Boris was caught with a mechanism, in his sword that would set off the “hit” marker. Boris was able to manipulate the apparatus and attain hits whenever he wanted. As a result, he was disqualified and hurried out of the country in shame.

Frederick Lorz

The 1904 Olympics were held in St Louis, Missouri. Fred finished the event with a remarkable time of 3 hours and 13 minutes. It was later discovered that after nine miles, his manager picked him up in a car and they drove together for the next 11 miles. Fred was stripped of the gold medal, which was given to Thomas Hicks, a British athlete. Ironically by today’s values, Hicks would have also been disqualified for using strychnine and brandy to assist him during the contest.

Spain’s basketball team

The Spanish men’s basketball team won gold, but had to give back their medals. An examination made on the team revealed that nine of the players on the team had no disability. The squad had beaten the Russians to win the gold in the intellectual disability competition.

Women’s high jump

Hermann Ratjen was discovered to be a man. This situation unlike numerous others was more of a medical mix-up than a conscious attempt to deceive. “Dora Ratjen” competed at the 1936 Olympics where he/she placed fourth in woman‘s high jump. Hermann then went on to set a world record at the European Championships in Vienna. On his way home, he was apprehended at a train station after travellers had alerted authorities of a male abroad who was travelling dressed as a woman. A doctor confirmed that “Dora” was without a doubt a man. After the exam, the medical doctor explained that ‘Dora’ had a birth imperfection, which explained why the midwife had mistaken the baby for a woman.

Ben Johnson

Ben Johnson was born in Jamaica in 1961. He immigrated to Canada with his kin in 1976 and trained in Scarborough, Ontario under the supervision of former Olympian, Charlie Francis. His first big international success came in 1982 when he won medals at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia. At the Seoul Olympics, Ben placed first in the 100m dash but botched the drug test. He was stripped of his gold medal and his world records.

Date:Saturday June 12
Time:from 20:30
Competition:

England vs USA this is the opening game in Group C brings together face to face, its not just a match its battle real battle for England to revenge. At the past USA beat England in World Cup the 1950 FIFA World Cup clash in Belo Horizonte which the Americans, seen as a ‘ragtag’ outfit back home, took a battering ram to convention and upset their fancied opponents 1-0. With Slovenia and Algeria also in the group at South Africa 2010, the Rustenburg game could be pivotal in the fight for qualifying places.
Football analysts treat this victory one of the biggest upset in the World Cup history. Because At the time, the English considered themselves the “Kings of Football”, with a post-war record of 23 wins, 4 losses, and 3 draws. Conversely, the Americans had lost their last seven international matches (including the 1934 World Cup and 1948 Summer Olympics) by the combined score of 45–2. The odds were 3–1 the English would win the Cup, and 500–1 for the U.S.

On 29 June 1950, at the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the United States defeated England 1–0 in a group match. In recent year, the event has been named the “Miracle on Grass”, in reference to the Miracle on Ice.The match was played in Belo Horizonte at Estádio Independência. The game and the U.S. team were profiled by author Geoffrey Douglas in his book The Game of Their Lives, which was made into a film of the same name (later renamed as The Miracle Match).

Before match Everyone predict that England defeat USA easily, even they debate how the score line look like is it eng 5-usa 0 or ENg 7-USA-0 or so on. But certainly USA won the match 1-0(Scorer-Gaetjens 39 min). The U.S. struggled to move to the offense, and finally managed a shot on goal in the twenty-fifth minute, which was blocked by English goalkeeper Bert Williams. The English counterattacked with three successive clear shots at the goal in minutes 30, 31, and 32, but failed to score. Mortensen twice went over the crossbar, and Tom Finney’s header to the top corner was tipped away by Borghi.

In the thirty-seventh minute, Bahr took a long shot twenty-five yards out, but as Williams moved to his right to intercept, Gaetjens dived headlong and grazed the ball enough to put it to the left of the English goalkeeper, whose momentum prevented him from changing direction, and into the back of the net. The crowd exploded as the U.S. improbably led 1–0.England had no more chances on goal and the game ended in victory for the U.S. team. After that England lost their next match and failed to qualify for the Final Round, finishing the First Round with a record of 1-0-2.
After the match Newspaper headlines in most World Cup nations trumpeted the shocking upset, except in the United States and England.

There was only one American journalist even at the World Cup: Dent McSkimming of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, who could not get the newspaper to pay for the trip, and had taken time off of work to cover the event. His report of the match was the only one to appear in any major American newspaper.

Now back to the present 12 jun both team again fight each other in the 2010 present World Cup event. Whole world got Eagle eye on this match specially England want to be written the new history.

England now in the great form Under their new coach Fabio Capello,England put together a near-perfect qualifying campaign, winning nine of their ten games and scoring 34 goals – six more than Spain, the next best – to top Europe’s goal chart with Wayne Rooney joint second in the individual scoring roster. The team spirit is really high at the moment, their confidence may be little low after loosing their skipper Rio Ferdinand, but the team name England always have great replacement super sub, they allready include Michael DAWSON.

Both team looking very confidence for their upcoming match. Joe Cole, England midfielder say “The big difference is that we’ve got a fit Wayne Rooney in this squad. And the squad is quite experienced. Obviously we’re missing Rio but this squad is balanced. I think this is a lot of guys’ last chance, considering their age at this World Cup,”

Donovan say
“We have a lot of European-based players and watch the Premier League all the time on TV, so there will be no surprises from the England team. And, after our experience in the Confederations Cup last year, we are confident we can play all the big teams and not only compete with them but get the better of them, too – starting with England. “USA’s Landon Donovan again say “After our experience in the Confederations Cup last year, we are confident we can play all the big teams and not only compete with them but get the better of them, too – starting with England”.

Tim Howard, USA goalkeeper say

“If we give up too many wide free-kicks and direct free-kicks, we will probably get punished for it. It’s important we’re solid in defence and not leave guys open one-on-one,”

Lets see What happen who will able to grab the win?? England or USA?

The framework for generating and creating an mp3 e-book occurs in 6 levels: one) resourceful; 2) techie; three) authorized; four) output; 5) distribution and promoting; and, 6) Huge Celebration. Point 1: Innovative There’s a lot more to this phase than pursuing the muse willy-nilly. It is important to spend attention to your logical self to remain organized. It really is necessary as a way to communicate efficiently with the sound engineer and some other professionals you will be functioning with. Not to say saving time, dollars, and sanity. Through the imaginative degree you might be preparing, establishing the subject material for that Cd, saving, and later inside the modifying period, swapping data with your sound engineer. Right after the preliminary saving, you will be modifying for clarity, completeness, and cohesion. So how do you go about obtaining an music engineer? You can come across this sort of people as a result of online analysis and personalized networking. I identified mine through an online pal. He was a joy to collaborate with because he was simpatico with my project. Due to his status, I knew that I could trust him. I spent two days in my appear engineer’s home studio in Nashville recording all the poems. Right after I returned household to St. Louis, he despatched MP3 recordsdata for my assessment and thorough reaction so as to finish his enhancing. Within our venture we had been collaging ninety poems and hundreds of clips from tracks, stories, and banter recorded in my father’s parlor. He understood the nature and function of my project so completely that with minimal route, he made fantastic initial selections, but these nevertheless needed to be refined. In the course of the file-swapping section, you call upon your extremely analytical, crucial listening abilities. You will listen for top quality of the mp3, pause intervals, and finalizing the material. For illustration, in my challenge we listened specially for pause intervals between the poems along with the track, a story, or the banter involving us that framed it. If you end your review of the MP3 information, you ship notes (like a play director) again for your mp3 engineer who will take proper care from the rest. Suggestion: Produce a map to organize your documenting do the job. Ahead of our group recorded in Pop’s parlor, I wrote out the songs I associated with every in the book’s 5 sections so we wouldn’t waste time. After the four mini discs have been completed, I listened to them and cataloged their contents based on working time. This catalog became a handily coded roadmap that he and I could refer to. It saved plenty of time in the session, and time, trouble–even money–as he moved deeper to the modifying approach. Hint: Apply prior to taking. Be existing, alert, and open to your emotional response so that you can bring it into your reading. Think of your voice as instrument. Use inflection, pacing, and pitch to sustain listener engagement. Step two: Complex During the specialised stage the mp3 engineer masters the disc, and you come to a decision how the discs will span. This means, exactly where will the tracks as well as the CDs themselves break should you are doing a lot more than one disc. In our mission there were 4 discs, so this action was vital. Your engineer sends you the initial total function in Compact disc format-your challenging imitate. You ship back again feedback, including any technical glitches to clean up. Stage 3: Authorized From this degree onward, the essential phrase is “business.” You’ve established the material and done what most of us would consider the pleasurable element. Now it is all straight-ahead do the job. A whole new term I discovered in the course of this period was “mechanical licensing.” Mainly it’s permission to utilize copyrighted musical products that are getting replicated for sale in recorded structure. Royalties are computed on an elaborate equation of quantity of employs every Compact disc and number of CDs. The mechanical licensing for our undertaking to produce 1,000 copies price all-around ,000, roughly for each mp3 ebook bundle together with the four CDs. We also copyrighted seven first music. I hired a specialist to complete this do the job, and it positive compensated away in headache and income. As you can see you’ll find myriad specifics to take care of during this phase. You may want to designate a challenge supervisor. I didn’t want to complete this myself, so my seem engineer also started to be my place man or woman to manual us by way of the company issues. He gave me great guidance through. Stage four: Development At this place, you opt for an organization to physically generate your venture. Development consists of pressing and replicating the discs, making the insert, and packaging the entire product. You might have to choose what companies you need from among the several ones the organization offers. For illustration, will you generate the art work your self or will they? How several copies do you would like? In my situation we chose a creation organization through online comparison buying and resolved to produce 1,000 copies. That seems like a good deal, but 1,000 copies was wherever the selling price every copy started out to make sense. Also, should you do a different output run, the law demand you to resume and redo each of the mechanised licenses. Ack! Degree 5: Distribution and Marketing and advertising The way you try this will rely on numerous aspects this sort of as the power of the current promoting platform along with your accessible assets. You can cost the product or service at this position. A minimal rule of thumb should be to double the fundamental cost invested. In the event you are undertaking it by yourself, come up with a marketing and advertising and distribution prepare just as you’ll for a self-published book. We salute Sophia Hollander of The Wall Street Journal, whose article is linked at “More,” for raising this question, which media types and the sport’s insiders often discuss–but hardly ever in print. Here are a few points to consider at the top: First of all, at least 43,000 of the 45,000 people entered in the ING New York City Marathon could care less whether this 26.2-miler is a world record course or not, whether it’s likely to produce a 2:03 or a 2:07 or a 2:11 winning time. (And most of the marathoners, particularly foreign entrants like the 3,400 Italians and 3,000 French people, relish the tour of the city they get to experience on the run. If you’re going to have a marathon touching in all five boroughs, which was the whole point of going from Central Park to the city streets in 1976, you pretty much have to have the spectacularly inspiring Verrazano Narrows Bridge start on Staten Island, with New York Harbor below. And you have to proceed from there to Brooklyn, and along the wide avenues which can accommodate the enormous throng of runners. How would you get from Brooklyn to Queens other than over the Pulaski Skyway? Or from Queens to Manhattan other than over the Queensboro Bridge, which spills the runners out in front of the ecstatic crowds on First Avenue–the only East Side avenue wide enough to handle them–and provides what is perhaps the marathon’s most exhilarating moment?

The race takes the most direct, and shortest, trip to the Bronx from there. The Bronx, where I lived until age five, is a far more splendid and variegated land than its public image suggests, and the small section of the borough visited by the marathon is hardly its garden spot. As quoted by Ms. Hollander, American marathon recordholder Deena Kastor observes “to be in no man’s land when you need the energy the most is pretty disheartening.”

That’s a challenge that a five-borough New York City Marathon, if it’s going toremain a five-borough one, may never be able to surmount. Yes, the course can be tinkered with; a few years ago, the entrance to Central Park from Fifth Avenue was changed to 90th Street from one closer to 103rd Street – which was steeper and narrower and required one more change in a runner’s rhythm. The essential nature of the New York City Marathon was not altered at all by this switch. It would be if the Bronx were ignored.

There is truth in Ms. Hollander’s observation that “the challenging topography and slower times run on New York’s course has prompted some of the world’s greatest runners to bypass the city in favor of other faster races, and has led others to call for changes to the course itself,” and Chicago’s main appeal as an autumn alternative for elites is that it is so flat and fast. “You can see a point at an athlete’s career where it just makes sense to bring them to our event,” states Chicago Marathon Race Director Carey Pinkowski.

Most of the 125,000 people – oh, let’s say 98.6 percent – who applied to get into last Sunday’s ING New York City Marathon don’t care that it’s slower than Chicago or London or Berlin. Last Sunday in New York, fans of world class marathoning did get to see men’s and women’s competitions with myriad lead changes and tense tight battles until the late stages. They won’t witness anything like this in Berlin or the United Arab Emirates, where races with less than a handful of legitimate contenders are set up as time trials on surfaces as flat as 400-meter tracks. Perhaps moreso than any of the other so-called World Marathon Majors, the New York City Marathon is always a thrilling athletic contest.

“The course has been the same for how many years now, 35, 33-some years? So I think that she’s probably taking a good look at that,” Carey Pinkowski says of the New York layout and of his World Marathon Majors colleague, New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg. “We’ve looked at this very, very hard the last several years,” notes Wittenberg. “Every year, every time, the benefits outweigh any benefits of a change.” She adds “running through the five boroughs, which is really fundamental to us and to the race, outweigh the challenges of not being a fast, flat race. It’s a course that’s stood the test of time for very good reasons.”

We concur on this. We also think she shouldn’t try to block the Bronx from getting its own marathon. “The Bronx problem” is one that the New York City Marathon will never solve, so … let’s be kind.

The IAAF Male Athlete of the Year will be announced at the World Athletics Gala in Monaco on November 21. Online fan voting played a role in determining the finalists, and they are 800-meter world record-holder David Rudisha of Kenya, American record-holding hurdler David Oliver, sprint superstar Tyson Gay, Eritrean distance ace Zersenay Tadese, and Norwegian javelin thrower Andrea Thorkildsen. (photo of David Oliver by Victah Sailer)

Team USA Minnesota’s Katie McGregor set a personal best of 2:31:01 at the ING New York City Marathon, placing 11th among the women and second (behind Shalane Flanagan) in the USA Women’s Marathon Championship. She was in the lead pack for 21 miles. “It was great to have a big group to run with since there was some wind,” says McGregor. “I felt like I ran a smart race overall. I didn’t accomplish the main goals I set for myself (sub-2:30 time and top ten or better finish), but I am still satisfied with the way I ran my race. I know that I am capable of running faster in the future.” McGregor won the women’s division of 2010 USA Running Circuit (her teammate Antonio Vega won the men’s division) after national titles at 15K, 25K, and 10 miles.

The older sister of the late Ryan Shay, who was a large part of the inspiration for his starting his own running career, had hoped to run through the five boroughs last Sunday to raise money (,200) and awareness for wounded war veterans. But she ended up having an emergency appendectomy in a Manhattan a couple of hours before the race began. “Isn’t it crazy?” Shay said weakly, from her hospital. “I’m just really sad. I didn’t care if I ran slow. I just really wanted to be out there running.” She had begun having acute stomach pain on Saturday and went to the hospital as her condition got worse.

No. No, they are not. Not only because the defending champion (and collegiate 10,000-meter record-holder) from Liberty University is so supreme, but because most of the runners with the vaguest shot of defeating him are from schools that can contend for the team title (Liberty won’t) and they have to worry about not “blowing up.” Okay… I’m only about 87 percent on what I just typed, and I know David McNeill of Northern Arizona and Chris Derrick of Stanford and one of the Oklahoma State lads and some middle distance runner from Oregon overachieving at the longer stuff might challenge Chelanga. But in a confusing and unpredictable world, I just like to be really sure of something ever once in awhile. I’m pretty sure anyway. Chelanga himself states “the main goal is to be in shape in November…I feel like I’m not ready yet.” But he will be. (photo of Sam Chelanga by Victah Sailer)
The 2011 Boston Marathon field filled up after just a little more than eight hours of online registration on October 18, but computer glitches kept some who’d tried to register out in the cold. The Boston Athletic Association has been awarding starting bibs to those who can prove they unsuccessfully tried to register during those hours on October 18.

Virgin has been elected to the USA National Hall of Fame but has asked that his induction be delayed until 2011, when the ceremony will be in St. Louis, near to his Illinois home and, he says, “I hope to have 100 people on hand.” Raised on a family farm, Virgin, now 55, still holds a slew of records in his home state–and his three-mile mark in the state cross country championships recently withstood an assault by Foot Locker Cross Country titlist Lukas Verzbicas. “He gave it a great shot,” Virgin observes. “At two miles he was ahead of my pace…My hat’s off to him.” Virgin’s been an NCAA champion, an Olympian, and a Boston Marathon runnerup, but he hesitates not a moment in identifying his running career highlight as “winning two world cross country championships. At least for two days in my life, I was the best in the world at something.”

Bolt, the Jamaican superstar, will be trying to defend his Olympic 100 and 200-meter golds in London in 2012. Lewis observes “the Olympics is two years away and it is amazing what can happen in that time. It’s a big challenge. I am the only one who has ever been able to double up and win 100m gold at successive Olympics (in 1984 and 1988) and I can tell you it’s a hard thing to do.” Lewis also predicts that the 100-meter world record, Bolt’s 9.58 seconds, will eventually dip below 9.0. “We will be long gone by then but it is always going to be reduced because people always want to beat the best,” he theorizes. Okay, Carl, but will there still be humans inhabiting the planet then?

The New York City firefighter had run a marathon close to 3:00, but when a bus hit him in 2005, he suffered a crushed left leg and severe internal injuries. Charlie Butler of Runner’s World recalls that when he met Long 18 months later, “he didn’t know when or if he would ever be able to run again. He just hoped one day he would be able to run the six mile loop in Central Park and then go have a beer with his buddies.” Long, with the help of Butler, tells his tale in ”The Long Run“ (Rodale, 2010) and he has far surpassed those original hopes. “It took me a long time to find someone as badly hurt as I was,” Long observes. “When I found him, I said I would help other people. The human spirit is a tremendously powerful tool. I had been wallowing in things I couldn’t do anything about. Once I changed my attitude, things started getting better.”

In the capital of Port-au-Prince, Michelle Hamilton informs us, Livesay “dodges buses, donkeys, and potholes in the 100-degree heat for a larger purpose: Through running, she has raised more than 0,000 to help care for the people of Haiti.” Livesay adopted two Haitian children in 2002 and moved from Minnesota to the Caribbean nation in 2006 as a volunteer for Christian nonprofits. Through two marathons she ran, Livesay was able to raise 9,000 for an ambulance and medicine for her community. After Haiti’s devastating earthquake in January, Livesay soon found “running was the only thing that made sense to me, that had an element of control to it.” Her teenage daughter has now launched her own projects to benefit the Haitian people.

Former world and current American marathon recordholder KhalidKhannouchi is a familiar figure to Central Park Track Club members, who’ve seen on his training sessions in Rockefeller State Park up in Westchester County. Now the CPTCers, who wear orange proudly, will see him in upscale attire at their Fourth Annual CPTC Benefit on November 12, where he’ll be an honored guest and featured speaker. The event, with full dinner and open bar, is a 7:00 p.m. at the Olympic Suites at the New York Athletic Club. (photo of Khalid Khannouchi by Victah Sailer)

The State Farm Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon weekend will now include a half-marathon relay, with each of two persons running 6.55 miles. This is a chance to get a new personal best for 6.55 miles, folks. The February 5 and 6 weekend also features a 5K, 8K, half and full marathon and a marathon distance hand cycle race. In the 13.1-mile relay, the unique rectangular-shaped course twice crosses the Indian River–once at the five-mile mark and then again at about the 12-mile mark–giving each team member their own bridge crossing: the signature mark of the event.

The Publix Georgia Marathon and Half-Marathon in Atlanta and its environs on March 20, 2011 have implemented a new elite runner program catering to Georgia and runners from the southeastern United States for the March 20, 2011 race. The program will increase the overall prize purse from ,500 in 2010, to ,250 in 2011, a 50 percent increase, and offer separate prize schedules for legal residents of Georgia, legal residents of the southeastern U.S. and overall participants. According to the program’s specifications, eligible runners will have the opportunity to win prize money from all three categories.

The decertified NFL players association – which is not, I repeat, not a union – is encouraging incoming players to skip the league’s draft festivities in late April if the current lock-out by owners is still going on. Instead, the not-NFLPA is planning to have its own party over the same three days at another location in New York City as an alternative for the draftees so that they don’t walk across the stage at Radio City Music Hall and shake the hand of “the man,” NFL commissioner Roger Godell. This is akin to a high school having two separate proms down the street from each other. It’s bad enough that the NFL itself already has set itself up with a dual-coverage situation by selling broadcast rights to the draft to ESPN, but then still having its own cable network televise the event as well.

Just as we don’t need both Chris Berman and Rich Eisen on two channels talking about it, we don’t really need spoiled college football players at two different draft events. Hell, 30 years ago the NFL draft was a bunch of guys sitting around a conference table divvying up players from across the country. It was a fantasy football draft before there was such a thing. When ESPN first put it on the air, it wasn’t because they were enlightened geniuses who saw its potential. They just needed programming to avoid showing another rerun of the Scottish Highlands competitions.

The most galling thing, I believe, in the not-a-union NFLPA’s request is the part that they’ve left out when they’re talking to the young men that will soon be members of their nonexistent organization. While it is true that the NFL’s owners are the ones that enacted the lockout – and, to be honest, that’s partially because while each and every one of them made a boatload of cash in one or more ventures, they suddenly turn into morons when it comes to running a sports team – the former NFLPA has already stated its intention of selling the draftees down the river. Most observers have long agreed that one thing that the owners and players have found common ground on is the issue of a rookie wage scale, which will cap the amount of money that players entering the league will be able to make.

That is actually a sound business plan and the players, for their part, are looking at it as a way to drive money to more established players and into funding for retired players. However, do you think that in their invitation to their draft soirée the union happened to mention to the young potential millionaires the part about the limited contracts? Do you think that it was signed by the St. Louis Rams’ Sam Bradford, who signed a 6-year, -million contract, with -million guaranteed, as last year’s number one draft pick? Or, by Detroit ’s Matthew Stafford, who received a 6-year, -million contract, with -million guaranteed, the year before?

Again, were I a business owner, I would also want to pay less for unproven talent. And, were I an established employee, I would want incoming employees to have to earn their keep before getting a bigger piece of the pie. It’s the hypocrisy of asking young players to not participate in an event that every player currently in the league had a chance to participate in. The hypocrisy of asking young men not to have their one shining moment of getting to hold up a jersey with their name on it and posing for pictures with their families…a moment that the NFLPA’s membership joyfully (for the most part) participated in themselves. There is a long list of potential casualties from the NFL labor strife – local businesses, vendors, parking attendants, etc. – it isn’t surprising that it didn’t take long for common sense to fall on the sword.

When the human body first experiences stress adrenaline takes over and causes a chain-reaction within the nervous system. The heart begins to beat faster, the sizes of the blood vessels are changed, and the body actually prepares itself for a frightening or emotional event. Even though the humans that are in existence today arent in constant physical danger from wild predators as our pre-historic ancestors were, we still experience this familiar fight-or-flight reaction due to a great deal of different types of stressors.

There are two main types of stress experienced by humans, either chronic or that which is emergency-induced. The chronic type of stress can be particularly harmful to the brain because of hormones and chemicals referred to as glucocorticoids or GCs. When the body experiences a rush of adrenaline which is accompanied by stress, a portion of our brain called the adrenal cortex begins to release these GCs which are useful for dealing with the emergency-type of stressors.

Chemicals such as cortisol, hydrocortisone, and corticosterone act together to increase the production of glucose, constrict blood vessels and essentially help our brains deal with or regulate stress. The GCs tell our brain either to calm down or to boost its levels of awareness and reaction in order to deal with the issue at hand. These glucocorticoids also affect memory functioning, especially in the hippocampus region of the brain.

]]>

While the GCs may help us remember frightening or stressful events so that we are better able to deal with them in the future, they can also be harmful to the delicate neurons of the brain. Prolonged periods of stress or depression may actually lead to the damage or even the death of certain neurons, especially those within the memory center of the brain.

It is important to remember that different people react differently to stressors; one person may be able to move on from a trying event while another may suffer from serious psychological effects from a similar event or situation. Learning if your stress is chronic or acute is critical for counteracting the negative affects it has on the brain. Those people who are prone to anger, anxiety, depression, and who suffer from low self-esteem are far more likely to experience damage to the brain than their calmer, more relaxed peers.

Most every one of us experiences bouts of depression or periods of the blues at some point in our lives, but a person who is constantly angry or depressed may require medical or professional assistance. While it may be possible to recover from depression through various means such as drug therapy or counseling, the long-term affects on the brain are still largely unknown. Doctors have recently reported that as many as fifty percent of patients who experienced periods of major depression also possessed high levels of cortisol, which as we know can have negative effects on the brain and cells.

A recent study conducted by The Washington University School of Medicine located in St. Louis, Missouri has shown conclusive evidence of damage to the brains neurons in people suffering from depression. Even those people who had been depressed years prior to the testing still showed signs of brain damage, as much as 12-15 percent cell atrophy in their hippocampus, resulting in the loss of an infinite number of memory cells.

Aerobic exercise is an excellent way to reduce stress and its negative effects on the brain. By engaging in some sort of physical activity the body is able to relax, relieve levels of tension and stress, and burn off nervous energy all at the same time. Endorphins, which are the feel good chemicals produced within the brain, are dramatically increased when we exercise which in turn makes both the body and the mind feel better. Not surprisingly, self-esteem can also even be lifted with regular exercise as well as an increased overall body image.

In his book Saving Your Brain, Dr. Jeff Victoroff theorizes that the cultural evolution and fast-pace of society today has essentially overwhelmed the capabilities of the brain. However, by simply relaxing, slowing ourselves down and learning how to better deal with the common stressors of every day life we can literally save ourselves from brain damage.

Big-brained idealists with little local real estate knowledge have been breaking ground new condominium developments in record numbers in the past decade here in the US. Not every ground breaking is indeed Ground-Breaking, nor are such events good news for the overall health of any given real estate market. According to Realtor.com, there are currently 22,578 condos currently on the market in Miami Florida. The effects over oversaturation can be devastating to a local real estate market.

Since all real estate is local (you can’t buy a 3000 sq ft split level across from Central Park for 9,000 as you can in say Little Rock, AR), values are determined within a particular geographical location by a variety of non-market driven factors: the properties cache, it’s location, amenities, size, condition, etc. However, real estate values are greatly also affected by simple supply and demand. With the surge of new construction projects littering the US in the past decade, such developments not only flood the condominium market with a plethora of inventory, thereby possible reducing prices, but can add to the perception of a stagnant real estate market. More inventory has an ability to chill a potential buyers sense of urgency. A high substitutability factor of available condos can quickly knock the wind out of any new buyers’ sails as well. Furthermore, an oversupply of non-performing condos can pave the way for future foreclosure. Upon resurfacing, those condos come back on the market, and have a tendency to shock the local real estate market with artificially low asking prices, causing the entire market to react.

Missing a target market is devastating to the developer looking to make a fortune on his or her latest project. Building large condos with “neighborhood breaking” asking prices, or developing the wrong style of building for a given location or demographic can wreak havoc for a developer and the unlucky neighborhood that gets saddled with such a misnomer. The model for any new development project that works in New York City, is not going to work in St. Louis. How is it that the phrase “When in Rome”, doesn’t apply here? It does. Local real estate markets benefit when a developer does his or her homework, and can match a product with it respective marketplace. Downtown Philadelphia has recently seen a half dozen high-profile new construction projects crash and burn prior to a shovel hitting the dirt. From poor planning to a lack of local real estate research and good old fashioned listening, developers are packing their bags prior to unpacking their bags. In some cases, perhaps for the best, such projects have not been built. “The market could have easily absorbed a few of these projects, should it have been based upon logical and solid research” according to Jim Thornton, of Prudential Fox and Roach Realtors in downtown Philadelphia. “Developers who don’t know the area, and try to fit our landscape into their mold, are in for a bit of a shock”.

A graduate of Bowling Green School of Business in Northwestern Ohio, Mark began selling in Philadelphia (Society Hill real estate and other Center City areas) in 1989 and has been in love with it ever since. He still resides in a low rise, four unit condominium building in Old City and loves the area!

Drove to Quebec City, about ten miles. Today is the Feast of St John the Baptist, a major holiday in Provence Quebec. Over 250,000 people gathered the previous evening on the Plains of Abraham for a concert and fireworks display. The streets in the Old City were still filled with revelers and sanitation workers were cleaning up the debris left from the huge party.

With the temperature in the nineties we took our water bottles and started off on the walking tour of the old city. The old city, vieux Quebec, is surrounded by a wall with only a few gates to permit entry. Our first stop was the Jesuit Chapel built in 1817. This is a very simple chapel whose architect was a member of the Baillairge dynasty. They seem to have designed most of the churches in Provence Quebec.

Down the street, next to the fortifications, is Artillery Park, a National Historical Site of Canada. The park has buildings you can visit. The most interesting of them is the Dauphine Redoubt. The lowest two floors were built by the French in 1712. The British added a third floor, and the Canadians added a fourth floor when the complex was used as a munitions factory from 1902 until 1964. The park includes an officer’s quarters and a barracks, which is the longest building built by the French in North America. Until then the soldiers were quartered in the homes of civilians.

From Artillery Park we walked the historic streets to the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the oldest parish North of Mexico. Bishop Laval, the diocese first bishop traveled most of the diocese, which extended from Newfoundland to New Orleans, LA. Remember that all of the land along the Mississippi once was claimed by France. Across the plaza is the City Hall and next door is the Seminary, which eventually became Laval University.

A short three block walk is the luxury hotel, Chateau Frontenac, which dominates the Quebec Skyline. The tower was not part of the original hotel. When a fire destroyed the old hotel the tower was built and the hotel surrounded it. This seems to be one of the focal points of the city. Many people congregate around the hotel, perhaps because of the numerous parks which surround it.

A walk down Rue St. Louis bring you to a tree with a canon ball in its roots, a souvenir from the fall of Quebec in 1759 under a hail of over 20,000 cannon balls.
Walking the streets is a real treat. Even though the sidewalks are narrow and the streets climb up and down the hills, the experience is one of being in an eighteenth century French town.

The changing of the guard at the Citadel is a must see event. The Citadel, erected on the original French site in 1820 to ward off attack from the USA, is the home of the 23rd Regiment of the Canadian Army. Formed during World War I, as the only French speaking Canadian regiment, they have also seen combat action during World War II and the Korean Conflict. At 10:00 A.M. daily they hold the traditional changing of the guard, complete with marching band and their goat mascot. Sixteen men, plus their officers are on guard duty for twenty-four hour periods. The ceremony takes thirty-five minutes and is then followed by an hour tour of the facilities.

The fortress is the largest fortification garrisoned by regular troops in North America. Star shaped in design, the main defense faced the river, the cannons having a two and a half mile range. While on the tour, the commandant’s wife waved from a second floor window to the group and showed off her two year old puppy, Chelsea. The Citadel overlooks the Plains of Abraham, where Montcalm lost the battle to Wolfe. During the battle, both lost their lives. There is free two hour parking inside the walls of the fortress. The entry is serpentine and the main gate is very narrow, the original structure from the fortifications.

We drove around the Plains of Abraham. Here too is free parking, the visitor’s center, the fine arts museum and beautiful views of the river. Here the cliffs protecting Old Quebec fall way to sloping access to the river, perfect entry for the army to attack.
Drove past the summit of Montmorency Falls. The falls have been dammed to harness electricity. A suspension bridge let people look down from the summit and a cable car takes passengers from the bottom to the top and vice versa. Since the falls are higher than Niagara Falls, use of the cable car is better than climbing the steps.
